  • Works involved the movement of more than 2 million m3 of colliery spoil.

  • The river was diverted along a 2km length to allow the land form to be reshaped to allow for a future bypass to the town of Bargoed.

  • In conjunction with the river diversion it was necessary to divert nearly
2.5km of trunk sewer in or adjacent to the river.

  • Much of the work was carried out on steep slopes.

  • Much of the existing river walls were demolished and replaced by a stone
faced earth retaining wall along the new line of the river.

  • A 120m long arched culvert was installed to accomodate the new river line.
Ponds were cast on site and lifted into place.

  • The total area for the two sites was 70Ha.

  • Extensive drainage including stone lined channels and cascades and underground pipe work.

  • Areas of contamination and burning material dealt with.

  • On the Brittannia Colliery site two mineshafts are capped.

  • At the Brittannia site a significant amount of existing hard material was
sorted, crushed and reused for footpaths and roads.
