  • The construction of approximately 8km of new and improved roads together with numerous structures located within a narrow and densely populated valley environment.

  • The ECI project was awarded to Costain Ltd in September 2004 with a 13 week Interactive Development phase to develop a Target Cost, followed by a 13 week Value Engineering Period.

  • Walters UK worked closely with Costain during the pre-qualification and tender stage including full representation at all pre and post-tender client interviews and workshops - a major factor in the decision to appoint Costain as Main Contractor.

  • Based on the clients design an initial target cost for earthworks of £9 million was agreed during the Interactve Development Phase. By working as a co-located, intergrated team with the Main Contractor, client and design team, this figure was subsequently reduced to £3 million as follows.

    • Off-site disposal reduced from 235,000m3 to on-site disposal of approx. 85,000m3.
    • Excavation quantities reduced from approx. 300,000m3 to 180,000m3.
    • Disposal of contaminated material (domestic rubbish) reduced from 13,000m3 to 4,000m3 by additional Sl undertaken during the Value Engineering Phase.
    • To remove the need for a river diversion, the team proposed relocation of a roundabout into the base of an adjacent mountainside requiring additional rock excavation. This additional cost was subsequently negated by crushing the resultant rock to replace approx 15,000m3 of imported granular fill
